KIA ORA, MATE - A news article that popped up on my notifications screen yesterday demonstrated the power of language in our society. It was the disastrous failure of the conglomerate Coca Cola ad campaign while attempting to combine reo Maori and English. This has backfired quite badly as the company has inadvertently written “Hello, Death” on a vending machine in New Zealand. It is quite inappropriate to regard language just as a method for communication. Huge experiences, history, and views of the world human being have been soaked deeply into a language since the beginning of the world. I come from a country that houses over 1600 languages of which around 150 have a sizeable speaking population even today. Most of them are on the verge of extinction and with ordered morphological rules, rule-based machine translation is the most promising and viable option for their restoration.
“There are at least two other more serious problems for endangered languages, more acute than just lack of mother-tongue transmission. There are languages whose last fluent speakers are already gone or are about to go. At a meeting at Glorieta near Santa Fe, New Mexico, a few months ago, we had actually the last living speaker of one of the languages come. It was a very sad experience for everyone, not just for that woman. And perhaps the saddest thing is that she cannot even talk to her sister anymore, who was the next-to-last speaker before she recently died. She can not call up anybody. The only person for her to talk to is a linguist and that is no fun.“
It is very sad to hear of stories like this. A proper free and open source language translation system for the indigenous languages is the need of the hour.
Apertium is a free/open-source platform for developing rule-based machine translation systems! It is free software and released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
Existing machine translation systems available at present are mostly commercial or use proprietary technologies, which makes them very hard to adapt to new usages. Apertium uses a language-independent specification, to allow for the ease of contributing to Apertium, more efficient development, and enhancing the project’s overall growth.
At present, Apertium has released 40 stable language pairs, delivering fast translation with reasonably intelligible results (errors are easily corrected). Being an open-source project, Apertium provides tools for potential developers to build their own language pair and contribute to the project.
Smart Apertium skill primarily uses Apertium-Apy, the API of Apertium to provide the users translations that are currently available in production phase of Apertium. You can also use this skill to learn all the translations that are offered by Apertium. This skill also helps in identifying the language spoken by the user. Though, document and website translation are also some of the primary features of Apertium, they are currently under development in this skill and are going to be live soon.

As this was my first Alexa skill, it took a significant amount of time for me to learn and develop the entire skill. Moreover, choosing an appropriate invocation name for the application took time as Alexa was rejecting most of the invocation names I had used earlier.
This skill is still in its primitive stage and needs to undergo a lot of development as of now. New features are to be added and it has to be made more interactive than now.
